Annapolis Royal is one of the more underrated day trips you can take from Halifax. This small town in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia, Canada, is cute, manageable, and has plenty to do. The community has one of the longest histories in North America – longer than Plymouth and Jamestown! Wondering what to do in Annapolis Royal? here are some of my favourite activities:
Where is Annapolis Royal?
Annapolis Royal is a small community in the Annapolis Valley, west of Wolfville. From Halifax, it is about a 2 hour drive. From Wolfville, about 1 hour 15 minutes. There is no public transit to this area of the province, unfortunately.
Visit the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens
The gardens in Annapolis Royal have 17 acres of plants and flowers to explore. Bring the little ones and find all the hidden creatures, birds, and fairy houses hidden in the gardens. Learn a bit about plants that are native to Nova Scotia, and walk along the beautiful boardwalk. Enjoy a coffee and a rest in the cafe.
Entry: Paid – variable rates for adults, children, and seniors
Visit the Farmers Market
Open every Saturday year round, this market has been ongoing for more than 40 years. Featuring fresh produce, prepare food, arts and crafts, it’s a great spot for a snack and a souvenir.
Have a meal at one of the MANY lovely restaurants
There are lots of great places to eat in Annapolis Royal. We recently had brunch at Arch & Po, a bakery and cafe. There is also a pub just behind this, under the same ownership. The food was excellent, and on Wednesday evenings they do a special pizza night. Be sure to take away some pastries and bread for the road.
Walk along the Annapolis Royal Waterfront
Annapolis Royal can be enjoyed in all weather, but of course a sunny day makes for a nicer walk. Head down the boardwalk and take the stairs to the ocean floor. Or, enjoy the view from one of the many patios – the one at Mad Hatter Wine Bar was tempting!
Visit one of the many art galleries or museums
Annapolis Royal is known as a bit of an ‘art town’. Featuring more than 30 art-related spaces (galleries, art shops), it’s a dream for art lovers. There are also two historical museums to visit to learn about the area.
Do Some Shopping
The main road in Annapolis Royal is full of sweet shops to visit. Pop into a few and speak with the owners to get a sense of the community. We visited Burnbrae Nova Scotia Boutique and Art Gallery to pick some some locally poured candles. And there’s a couple of great bookshops, including MareGold Books which features a collection of completely non-fiction works.
Tour Fort Anne National Historic Site
With the 2025 Canada Strong pass, there is no reason to skip the National Historic Sites. Fort Anne has beautiful grounds, as well as an interpretive centre. Make time for a visit and learn about the rich history of the area.
