Hidden behind tall walls and the formal entrance to an art gallery is Munich’s secret garden. Munich is a super expensive city to visit. Hotels are notoriously costly, museums charge, and restaurants hike up prices. Finding free things to do isn’t tricky exactly, but you do have to do your homework.
If you’ve ever been to Kingston, Ontario, you’ve probably looked across the harbour to Wolfe Island. Wolfe Island is the largest of the 1000 Islands, and located in Lake Ontario, Canada. It’s quaint and cute and easily accessible from city hub of Kingston. Kingston itself has lots going on, but if it’s a sunny day, hop on the free Wolfe Island Ferry (aptly named the Wolfe Islander III) and check out the island.
Germany is certainly not lacking in history and castles. A quick search for ‘Germany castles’ will bring up many of the top hits – the classic palaces that Disney films were based off. For me though, the whole journey up to this spot from the walk to the open air, was just such a unique experience, it trumped my visit to Augustusburg Palace!

The Village has recently opened a brand new building as their main exhibit/gift shop/ticket office. It’s a great spot to grab a souvenir from the Island. When you first enter, the exhibit asks ‘mood setting’ questions about home to get you in the immigrant mindset. The text inside the exhibit is in both French and English, and shares a little bit about the story of the Scottish in Scotland, their relationship with the British, and what factors made them come to Nova Scotia.
The ticket office was not “just behind” and the “one stop” was in fact a four minute change, which prompted the woman at the ticket office to raise one eyebrow at me. “Wellll,” she says “four minutes. It is very fast for a change.”
Cologne is a great city to base yourself for a week in Germany. Though the city itself is not known for being beautiful, there are some lovely neighbourhoods. It’s also very conveniently located for lots of great day trips. Here are 6 day trips from Cologne – all no more than 90 minutes away by train.
Brühl is super easy to get to from Cologne, and is on the route to Bonn. It is so ideally located between these two cities, that I would recommend considering staying in Brühl as your base for a few days in the area.
