Nova Scotia’s North Shore is home to some of the province’s most beautiful — and often overlooked — beaches. Stretching along the Northumberland Strait, this region offers warm waters and quiet coastal villages. Visitors can find a slower pace than the busier South Shore. It’s a perfect destination for a Nova Scotia day trip if you’re looking to escape the crowds.
This route takes you from Truro to Masstown Market, then to Blue Sea Beach Provincial Park, and finally to Pugwash. Pugwash is a charming seaside town packed with history and coastal views. You can easily make it a day trip (the full drive is under three hours). Or, slow down and spend the night in Pugwash to soak up the local vibe.
Start Your Day at Masstown Market
Just outside Truro, Masstown Market is a local landmark — and the perfect first stop on your road trip. The main market is packed with fresh, locally sourced food, from seasonal produce to baked goods and ready-to-eat meals. It’s a great place to grab a breakfast sandwich, stock up on road trip snacks, or pick up seafood to take home.
Try another great day trip in Chester, Nova Scotia
Across the parking lot, you’ll find the Catch of the Bay lighthouse. This seafood shop is famous for its lobster rolls and fish and chips. If you’re after something a little quieter, head across the road to the cafe instead. It’s usually less busy and serves a wild blueberry grilled cheese that’s worth the detour. Don’t skip the freshly churned ice cream while you’re there.
Head to the Beach: Blue Sea Beach Provincial Park
Nova Scotia’s North Shore beaches are some of the province’s best-kept secrets, and there’s no shortage of options. Malagash is a popular spot for cottages and rentals. But on this trip, we headed straight for Blue Sea Beach Provincial Park.
Even on a chilly, windy day, the beach was stunning. A wide stretch of pale sand, gentle waves, and space to roam without crowds. In fact, there was no one there at all! In the summer, it’s one of the warmest saltwater beaches in Nova Scotia, making it a favourite for swimming and picnicking. Facilities are basic but well-kept, with parking, washrooms, and picnic areas available.

They met to discuss the threat of nuclear weapons and promote global peace. Today, Thinkers Lodge is a National Historic Site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, open to visitors.
