Several years ago it seemed like a good idea to attempt to visit all of Nova Scotia’s provincial parks. This, obviously, did not happen because people have to go work. (i.e. I had to go to work.) Nonetheless – visiting new provincial parks in Nova Scotia is a fun thing to do when you don’t have anywhere else to be. And when someone in Halifax says “beach!” it’s a great time to find a new one. MacCormacks Beach Provincial Park it is then.
MacCormacks Beach is in Eastern Passage, which sounds lovely, and possibly is lovely. The beach is just past the edge of Dartmouth though so you don’t really feel like you’ve gone anywhere. This is fine! Not a complaint. In 23 minutes from downtown Halifax you can be on a white sand beach and still be back in time for dinner.
As my friend said – “I didn’t realize that there were beaches this close to Halifax!” It’s true – some people think you have to drive two hours to reach the ocean, and those people clearly need to look at a map. This is not a big province. You don’t have to try so hard. Here’s one, just in case:
But you’d also never know that on the flip side of Dartmouth there are cute little colourful shops and a beautiful beach with lots of spots for shell searching, rock piling, fishing, and dipping toes.
And if you keep wandering down the boardwalk, you can find the rock snake! A very long snake made of painted rocks, all contributed by cute members of the little Halifax/Dartmouth/Eastern Passage community. It was honestly very sweet. We even met a woman with her two tiny dogs who had contributed a rock in honour of her family, and wanted the dogs’ picture taken with the rock. I took the picture. It wasn’t easy.
MacCormacks Beach Provincial Park may not live up to the hype of, say, Arasaig, with its wooded trails and camping. Nor does it come with its own mountain like many parks on Cape Breton. But it’s pretty, and the water is warmish, and who doesn’t love a boardwalk? I was only two glad to tick off another provincial park from the (fairly extensive) list.
Only 39 more parks to go!
