Inverness is a relatively small city but thought of as the Capital of the Scottish Highlands. It is perhaps not on everyone’s ‘must see’ list when in the country. But that doesn’t mean it should be neglected. Not only is it a lovely city in its own right, but it makes a great base from which to visit other, smaller towns. These five easy day trips from Inverness are really just the beginning of what you could see using Inverness as a base. And, all are accessible using public transit – no car needed.
When I was choosing which city to stay in, I received completely contradictory perspectives from locals. The younger people I spoke to said Bristol was super cool, funky, and like a smaller version of London with lots of places to go out at night, vintage shops, and the large university. Other people however said Bath was THE place that Brits from the south went to vacation. There were lovely places to stay, and lots of sights to see. But – even they said it was tremendously expensive. Judging from those assessments, this extreme introvert figured Bath would be the way to go… but it was not to be.
If you only have 24 hours in Oxford, you’ll have to make some hard choices! Of course, you can always hit the highlight package: the University, the Bodleian Library, the river, the Botanic Garden, Christ Church College, etc. Or, you could get off the tourist trail a little bit and spend 24 hours in Oxford… a little differently.
I visited lots of museums and churches and old things while in Oxford. But the Story Museum was by far my top choice. Whether you are a child, have a child, or would like to remind yourself that you aren’t a child anymore, there’s something for everyone.
St. Ives is known as one of Cornwall’s most famous destinations. It’s won multiple awards for its beaches and for being a great family holiday destination. All this makes it hugely popular – and perhaps for an introvert/socially anxious traveler, not a seemingly attractive option. But! I am here to tell you, St. Ives is worth the hype. There are at least 6 reasons why you must visit St. Ives. It’s beautiful, with fantastic beaches, cute shops, and has a wonderful gallery.
